Find a masters program: The master plan

It’s not so easy to find the right and suitable Master’s program. There are now well over 9,000 different offers nationwide – and the number is rising. Lots of mass, but also a lot of class? As always, it depends on what you expect. But also how well one prepares the choice of the optimal study program and adapts to its goals. Our guide offers you some important guidelines on your way to finding the master’s degree program …

Find a master’s degree or enter the profession?

Before you begin the search, you should look to the future and ask yourself: Do I want to continue studying after my bachelor’s degree, or do I prefer to work? Or in other words: Do I need a master’s degree for the job that I would like to practice or is it already doing a bachelor’s degree?

Generally speaking, the credo is that anyone who wants to get into science and research, work in the higher civil service or in international organizations, or wants to fill management positions in large companies, needs a master’s degree. Likewise, master graduates are generally expected to earn a higher starting salary than bachelors.

But even the Bachelor is a professional qualification, which is now accepted and appreciated by employers in many industries and professions after years of skepticism. The approach of looking for a direct entry into a career after completing a bachelor’s degree and then gaining first job experience for a few years in the job before devoting oneself to further education when needed also has its own appeal.

In addition to occupational requirements, the question of where to find the right Master’s degree course should also include personal preferences:

  • Does scientific work make fun for me and does it give me the prospect of spending the next one to two years specializing in subfields of my field of study?
  • Or have I spent enough time in lecture halls and am eager to apply my theoretical knowledge in practice?

No matter how you decide – whether for the master or the career entry – the verdict is by no means final. The path to further education does not remain blocked even after years of work – and thanks to extra-occupational study models, not even alongside the job. Nevertheless, you can save a lot of time and detours if you ask the first question early.

Master’s programs: distance learning, extra-occupational or full-time?

If you have decided the question that you would like to find the right master’s program, the study model usually follows by itself: If you seamlessly follow your first degree course, you usually do so full-time. For working people who do not want to give up their job, but want to educate on the side, on the other hand offers a part-time or distance learning to bring study and work under one roof.

In part-time or part-time studies, lectures and seminars usually take place in blocks in the evenings or on weekends. Similarly, a distance learning course, in which individual self-study phases alternate with only a few presence and examination phases at the university.

So much flexibility comes at a price: The double burden of the job and the study at home is not all grown, especially as the part-time and distance learning through the lower workload and the regular study time increases. In addition, extra-occupational programs are usually associated with salted tuition fees, as they target a target group with regular income.

BWL-Bachelor: Which Master-Options do I have?

Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in business administration or other economics are well-positioned and generally have no problems finding a job without a master’s degree. However, also in this area: Who wants to make fast and steep career, which will probably hardly get around the master in business administration.

Especially graduates who are interested in risk controlling and finance usually have a suitable master after the business administration Bachelor degree. The in-depth course content predestines the graduates more for such postions.

Incidentally, the same applies to economists who want to come in exposed positions. This is usually only possible after they have found the right master’s degree program, because only then can the required methodological competence be acquired.

Of course, these insights have also reached the personnel departments of the companies. If two applicants are interested in the same position, those with a higher education degree – ie the MBA master – have a greater chance of being invited to a job interview.

However, a master’s degree in business administration does not fully recommend the master. Individuals who have struggled through the undergraduate degree course with a bang, will certainly have no fun with an additional master, which lasts several semesters – and this is usually reflected in the grades.

Graduates with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree do not necessarily have to bear the costs of the Master completely alone. Some companies provide extra-lucrative and promising employees with an extra-occupational MBA or cooperate directly with a university that has special masters opportunities for working professionals.

Business administration bachelors are more likely to be broad and not to specialize too much. Because that can harbor dangers. Anyone who limits himself too much and specializes in a specific area may later have problems finding a job in his or her area of expertise – despite the Master’s degree program.

Find a Masters Degree: Abroad?

Wanderlust is known to be a common phenomenon among students. However, a complete study abroad is out of the question for most undergraduate graduates: only about every twentieth student completes his Master’s degree abroad.

This is most often the case with lawyers, economists, social scientists, and linguists and cultural scientists who go abroad to improve their language skills or earn CV points and later careers in international companies.

In contrast to a complete study abroad speak against the now sometimes exorbitant costs, especially in the English-speaking countries.

A semester abroad within the Masters is the much more frequently chosen option. However, even for a stay abroad lasting only a few months, there is no time in many curricula without exceeding the tight standard period of study. In addition, the eligibility of services rendered abroad causes complications.

So if you plan to spend part of your master abroad or even find a complete Master’s program abroad, you should definitely pay attention to the international orientation of the degree program and inform yourself in advance about cooperation with foreign partner universities.

Master plan: the online search

Once you have clarified the basic questions, let’s get down to business: get an overview of their possibilities! Which study programs are open to you with your qualification?

A key differentiator for finding the right Master’s program is its connection: there are consecutive Masters programs.

Consecutive Master

build content on the previously studied Bachelor, create a professional connection to its basics and deepen or specialize the already learned content.

Another possibility is to study a subject-specific master’s degree. The previous undergraduate degree does not play a major role here. Example: If you have a BA in Business Administration then you can add a Master in “Sport Management” or “Marketing Management”. Likewise, a historian with a Bachelor degree is free to choose a journalistic master.

The sticking point: Only about ten percent of all Master’s courses are structured so flexibly. The selection is thus much more limited than with conventional masters.

Further education Master courses

are aimed at a working clientele. Admission requirement is in addition to a first degree at least one year of employment, since the contents of the study to build on the experience in the job.

Therefore, the often emphasized application-oriented further education masters are often offered extra-occupationally. The most well-known example is the Economics Master of Business Administration (MBA), which enjoys great popularity among professionals across industries.

Which admission requirements do I have to fulfill?

The places in Master’s programs are often limited and much shorter than in the Bachelor’s. Consequence: not every undergraduate graduate has a chance to get a masters degree. Instead, it is necessary to fulfill the necessary requirements and to apply for a study place as in the Bachelor’s.

Basically, the final grade of the Bachelor degree program counts to thin out the potentially wide field of applicants. In addition, certain areas of specialization or formal requirements such as language and specialist knowledge or a certain number of credit points must be proven. As a last step, higher education institutions may still organize a separate admission procedure in which candidates can secure a final place in personal interviews or written exams.

In addition, think about financial requirements: What are the fees for the Master, and are these to be paid for you?

The application procedure differs from university to university and even from department to department. First of all, you should therefore inform yourself thoroughly about which admission restrictions the desired study course entails and what belongs in the corresponding application folder.

Attention: In order to meet the respective application deadlines, you can not start collecting the necessary components early enough – especially when you need to submit a professor’s certificate, certificates or certificates, such as the TOEFL language test.

Tip: If you would like to continue studying at the same university as before, it is best to personally inform your professors and lecturers about the conditions for the subsequent Master.

There is no guarantee of a master’s degree course even with a good grade mark. Therefore, it is recommended not to rely solely on a horse: Do not commit yourself to a particular course of study, but send it necessarily applications for several Master’s study places, so as not to stand there empty handed in the end.
